Thanks, Roy! Souzay's recordings sparked my love of French melodie, a genre in which I still have so much exploring to do. Don't be surprised if you hear Le Colibri on a future mixtape!
Another stimulating selection - thank you Michael. Wonderful to see du Pré and Barenboim in there, and Glass, but I enjoyed it all, as always. I wasn't familiar with Caccini - the lute combined with Orliński's voice was angelic. 💙
So glad you enjoyed, Jules! Isn't that Caccini just stunning? There are many recordings of other voice types singing it with piano or strings, but the combination of lute and Orliński's countertenor pierces my heart each time.
If you're a fan of Glass, definitely check out Ólafsson's album of Glass works. I had the privilege to hear him perform a program of Glass and Bach a few years back in a candlelit warehouse space. He brought such a supremely meditative quality to both composers' music, there were a few times I forgot whether I was listening to music from the 17th century or the late 20th! 💙
Orliński, yes!! I remember this one from your Moments of Zen! A heart-piercer most definitely, seriously breathtaking!! And I recall a different Ólafsson Glass piece as well. This gorgeous piece here reminds me of the repetitive percussion of a train rolling through some remote, amber countryside… rushing you along when all you want to do is stay and savor. I adore the Mendelssohn July piece as well. I had a stressful first half of the month so I can relate to this one! 😂
*Love* your description of the Glass piece, Katie! The music's motion really does give a feeling of gliding effortlessly across time and space, a weightlessness of spirit that feels both foreign and familiar.
Here's to hoping the rest of your July is less like the storms of Mendelssohn's July and more like the peace of Dvorak's Silent Woods! 💙
my favorite piece in this mixtape was "Silent Woods" ! and I recognize this kind of peace exactly: "where dappled light gently illuminates pastel-hued wildflowers and birdsong sails through the warm, humid air."
Great list. Always happy to have some French song on here. Le Colibri on that Souzay album is another great melancholy one.
