Another spellbinding selection Michael. Thank you so much for introducing me to Ethel Smyth, and for the Britten piece which is transcendent. Over the years I have seen clips of Peter Pears singing Peter Grimes and I always feel hypnotised by it. Just lovely. 💙
Thanks so much, Jules! You’ll definitely enjoy exploring Smyth’s music — and I’m so glad you enjoyed that movement from Grimes. It never fails to cast a spell over me.
Pears had such a mesmerizing performance style. Watching him perform the songs Benjamin wrote for him always brings me to a happy place. The Michelangelo Sonnets are among my favorites, especially the third song here, starting at 3:17. 💙
What a fantastic clip of the two of them together. I agree about Pears. I don't know what it is about him; the voice - of course - but there's an indefinable something. Magnetism I guess. Thank you so much for that. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you for collecting and writing about this beautiful music, love your writing
Thanks, David! Hope you enjoy your time with this music.
